| It was the gloomy postwar year of 1947 when the news of a sensational young bass at the Vienna Volksoper spread like wildfire: his name was Otto Edelmann. Precious little was known about his life up to this point. He was born in Vienna and had wanted to become a boxer. He did study voice, but in the War, he became a POW and lost valuable years of practice. His first great success was in Verdi's Falstaff under the direction of Clemens Krauss on January 18th 1951. The next step to international renown was soon to follow. In the summer of 1951, Otto Edelmann sang Hans Sachs at Bayreuth. He brilliantly mastered this role which was to open the doors of all the major opera houses to him. Otto Edelmann once said that as a young singer he had five goals: to sing at the Vienna Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Bayreuth, La Scala and the Met. In the course of his great career, not only did he achieve this, but he achieved it with the greatest success. | |||||
