Yvonne Kenny is a wonderful singer, with a pliable, shimmering tone, a technique that allows her to sing at many dynamic levels from ppp to ff, and an intelligence and way with text that is underlined with absolute commitment. Over the years her voice has grown from light lyric-coloratura into lyric-in-full-bloom, and on this recital, part of Chandos' (mostly) winning Opera in English series, she stays relatively close to home, vocally speaking, only occasionally venturing out. One of those occasions is the big spinto aria from La Wally which she imbues with enough tension to make it work, complete with a solid top B. Lauretta's aria from Schicchi finds her wonderfully in her element, as does Ilia's from Idomeneo, Almirena's from Rinaldo (the ravishing--and ravishingly sung "Lascia ch'io pianga"), the duets from Linda di Chamonix and Pearl Fishers (with the excellent lyric tenor, Barry Banks), the Semiramide-Arsace Act 2 duet with a nicely manly Della Jones, and Matilde's aria from William Tell, intoned with a delicacy one rarely encounters. Other highlights are "Strange, dear, but true, dear ... So in love" from Kiss Me Kate, which, we can hope, will give the song a new lease on life, and Anne's lullaby from the last scene of The Rake's Progress. Occasionally, we might wish for a more varied tone and color, but perhaps this CD (76 minutes) is best played in chunks--as most solo-voice recitals should be. However you play it, you're sure to enjoy and admire it. Sonics are full and robust and most of the words are understandable.
