Selections recorded in July and September 1995. Though it can be likened to reading only the most dramatic moments from Shakespeare's dramas, the "bleeding chunks" genre of opera (so called because the excision of arias from the larger opera presumably leaves blood) is a cherished tradition. Marketers are fond of the device, especially when they have talents the magnitude of Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu at their disposal. The singing is undeniably great. Alagna has a powerful, heroic voice, reminiscent of the largest of the "Three Tenors." He doesn't float his pianissimos with the same other-worldly grace as Pavarotti; his is the realm of the ringing high note, a la Mario Lanza. He has the requisite good looks too. Gheorghiu is the stunning soprano married to Alagna. The voice is sheer feminine glory with an unabashed, silky vibrato. For the listener with even a passing interest in the dramatic power of song, this is an opportunity to experience the glory that is opera. |
