Notes & Reviews Back to Top
English composer Rutland Boughton is best known, to the extent he's known at all, as the composer of the opera The Immortal Hour (also available on Hyperion). This slight work had the distinction of being the most frequently performed opera in history by an English composer, chalking up something like a billion zillion performances in the early decades of the 20th century. It then disappeared completely, along with the rest of the composer's music. This is a pity. The Third Symphony shows a considerable degree of craftsmanship, and includes some lovely tunes, while the Concerto No. 1 for Oboe and Strings is a real addition to a very limited repertoire. If Boughton has a weakness, it's that despite his admiration for the Romantic, pagan, mystical world of "Celtic Twilight", his music never quite gets away from its cultured, inhibited Englishness. In short, he's a bit of a wimp. Nevertheless, anyone interested in the highways and byways of late Romanticism will enjoy these two charming works, well played and well recorded as they are.
