Martinu's reputation as a disconcertingly uneven composer receives further confirmation from this first recording of his Fantasia Concertante (one of his last works), written in 1959 for the Swiss pianist Margrit Weber (for whom also Stravinsky wrote Movements). It is a highly professional work, well made if not particularly memorable; but the style is as eclectic as ever. An energetic, very diatonic first movement is followed by a Poco andante which begins promisingly, leads to some purely chordal doodling on the piano's entry, and then wanders off into Bartokian impressionism. The most effective movement, without much doubt, is the finale (where Martinu recollects that he is supposed to be in B flat only after several pages in A): its exuberance and thrusting energy are most engaging. Margrit Weber has recorded the Falla before—in 1958 with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra; but this is a better version in nearly every way. The recording here is clean and bright-toned, with a wide dynamic range; the articulation of the strings in the finale is excellent; and Kubelik is more convincing over the tempo changes in the Danza lejana than almost anyone I have heard. -- Gramophone [9/1966, reviewing the original LP release of the Falla and Martinu] |
