Robert King directs the world famous King's Consort in a programme spanning the vocal scene in London during the baroque era.
In the late renaissance, Byrd and Tallis headed a major school of composers. From around 1670, royal patronage provided the background for arguably the finest flowering of British music. It generated work, interest and enthusiasm for music everywhere, particularly in London. For eighty years, London was as important a centre of musical excellence as it has ever been. Henry Purcell was the most significant composer, even though his career ended at a tragically early age, supported by others of great talent such as Blow and Humfrey. Handel too spent most of his compositional career in London, Arne being the leading figure in theatrical music. From Zadok the Priest with the Quiristers of Winchester Cathedral to My Beloved Spake, this popular programme features a top British solo line-up including James Bowman and Michael George. |
