| Although Arriaga's life was brief, it was astonishingly productive. In his 20 years, the so-called Spanish Mozart left such a significant legacy that when listening to any of his works - quartets, overtures, a symphony, dramatic scenes, etc. - we are touched by contradictory emotions of sadness and joy. The pleasure we feel hearing this youthful, clear, orderly music, full of restrained passion, is mitigated by the sadness of the composer's all too brief life, and the thought of how his early death robbed Spanish music of a European Romanticism which was never to appear again. Arriaga was 13 when he composed his opera The Happy Slaves (Los esclavos felices), and he was not much older when he wrote his Symphony in D. In both these works as in the three quartets, we can hear not only an apt pupil, a promise of greater things or strict adherence to the canons of the time, but also intimation of a decidedly personal Spanish voice. | |||||
