Certain musical pieces allow us to see a glimpse of the everyday workings of a time and place. These ten "Canciones" do exactly that. José Carreras gives us an impassioned look into the Spanish and Latin American worlds at the end of the nineteenth century, through the songs of more than a dozen lesser-known writers of the time (lesser-known to us perhaps). The style of these songs falls somewhere between the nineteenth century operatic aria and Spanish folksong. Accompanied by full orchestra, they are unapologetically grand and emotional.
With the same verve and fire, Carreras delivers these songs. His familiarity with the language and genre is clear, and his performance is dedicated and real. José Padilla's "Princesita" finds Carreras at his best, filling out the turns of a tuneful, sentimental phrase, which takes overt advantage of the operatic voice. If listened to once, these songs stay in the ear, as they did for the people who sung them joyously over a hundred years ago.
