| There are some things that are easy to identify but much more difficult to explain; the paso doble, for example. It is a sort of march, procession, song and dance in two-four time, generally happy, but on occasion sad. In the words of Manuel Machado in his poem on La Giralda by Juarranz: "...and a rhythmic gaiety in song, and a vague luxuriant sadness." The secret of the paso doble, its duende or magic as Garcia Lorca would say, lies in a primary set of contrasts; darkness and light, or, in bull-fighting terms "sun and shade"; minor key against major key, a rigid rhythm to sustain the verses with graceful, flexible melodies. The composer Chabrier, marveled at the quiet, classical, grave, tempered way Isaac Albeniz played Spanish music on the piano, showing the error of those who thought music was not truly Spanish unless the tempo was madly accelerated. Ravel too, as Spanish as he was French, protested at Toscanini's lively interpretation of his Bolero. With haste there is no mystery; and without mystery duende can't even get a look in and duende is what the Paso doble is all about as you will hear for yourselves on this delightful album. | |||||
