Selections recorded December 1997 and May 1998 at Lyndhurst Hall and Air Studios, London, England. The soprano's voice is a deceptive kind of delicate: its arching, lilting flight through the high range is so elegant, it's easy to forget the physical conditioning required to achieve such grace. Sumi Jo is more than up for the challenges of this album of 19th-century French arias. In this intimate recording, made with the accompaniment of the English Chamber Orchestra, Jo performs with a remarkable lightness. As Marguerite in Gounod's 'Faust,' she sounds almost weightless as her voice floats across a spring breeze. In a selection from Charpentier's 'Louise,' her notes are as smooth and rich as the sweetest violin. |
