Selections recorded at the Church of St. Silas the Martyr, London, England and St. Martin's Church, East Woodhay, Hampshire, England. Although the young Spanish pianist Eugenia Gabrieluk was born and received her early musical training in Russia, she sounds as though she has had the dances and melodies of Southern Spain in her blood since the time of birth. She is thus finely suited to the music of Angel Barrios and Manuel Infante--two 20th century Spanish composers who drew heavily on the sounds of Andalusia for their piano compositions. Barrios was the son of the famous flamenco guitarist and singer Antonio Barrios, so it comes as no surprise that his music amounts to a regional celebration of Spanish dance. Infante, on the other hand, was an accomplished pianist with a more cosmopolitan (especially French) musical vocabulary. His 'Gracia' (a theme and variations) sports a level of both technical difficulty and idiomatic piano writing that is absent in Barrios's discreet yet no less evocative piano textures.
