Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Since the beginnings of opera in France in the 17th century, the French have insisted that their operatic entertainment include dancing. In the 19th century, this stipulation extended to the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, who had to compose ballets afresh for the Parisian premieres of their works. While the plot motivation for a ballet can sometimes seem a bit strained, the delights these ballets provide are always welcome. DANCE OF THE HOURS gives ample evidence of the breezy and often delicious invention composers brought to this music. Sampling operatic ballet music from the 19th century, this compilation ranges from effervescent lightness (Amilcare Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours") to exotic seduction (Modest Mussorgsky's "Dance of the Persian Slaves") to rousing folk (Bedrich Smetana's "Furiant"). The performances are uniformly first rate, but those conducted by Charles Dutoit and Richard Bonynge stand out for their idiomatic grace.
