Long mainstays of the catalog on ASV 6018, Batiz’s bracing performances of Borodin staples return on Sanctuary’s Resonance label, sounding as fresh and alert as ever. Granted, his modernist interpretations won’t appeal to everyone: fast, texturally lean, acutely balanced, and generally more notable for their rhythmic spit than their timbral splendor, they represent the sort of anti-sensual perspective from which the absence of the chorus in the Polovtsian Dances doesn’t make much difference. No surprise, then, that the outer movements of the symphony create a stronger impression than the Andante, which offers more clarity than atmosphere. Still, for those who don’t want to wallow, these are splendid readings. The orchestra plays well, and even after 20 years, the engineering holds up: note, in particular, the lean solidity of the low brass. Recommended.

Peter J. Rabinowitz, FANFARE
