This CD contains both ADD and DDD recordings. SIMPLY THE BEST CLASSICAL ANTHEMS is a collection of well-known themes from the symphonic and operatic repertoire covering the late Baroque through middle twentieth century, with a majority of works from the classical and romantic periods. Most are energetic and powerful but a few pieces of the quieter sort give the listener a balance of moods. This is a set designed to appeal to the listener who is interested in recognizable selections of famous music without purchasing the entire works of such, and it has the appeal of drawing from many good recordings by different artists over the last forty years. The two-disc set contains a well-balanced program with shorter selections lending themselves nicely to the format because of their completeness and exceptional performances. Included in this category are "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's 'Turandot' sung by Placido Domingo in a 1968 recording and Variation 18 from 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini' by Rachmaninov, performed by Jénö Jandó, cleverly programmed onto track eighteen of disc two. |
