In the history books Arthur Honegger has gone down as a member of 'Les Six' along with Milhaud and Poulenc (and their three less-remembered colleagues), but most of Honegger's music reveals the arbitrary nature of that grouping. Honegger tended toward a more self-consciously serious aesthetic than his peers, though this is complemented by an almost athletic rhythmic vigor. This quality is most literal in 'Rugby,' whether this symphonic movement is heard as a vivid depiction of the violent sport or an abstract study in brilliant rhythm, brutal combinations of timbre, and arching lyrical themes. Similarly, his best known work, 'Pacific 231,' can be appreciated as a realistic illustration of a train ride or as an exercise in musical acceleration, ending either way in a rapid and rather frightening breakdown. The program conducted here by David Zinman with the Tonhalle Orchestra from Zurich, one of Honegger's home-bases, is well-rounded. In addition to the familiar short works, Honegger's symphonic output is represented by his Second Symphony, and the work's progress from sombre pessimism to ultimate joy seems convincing and inevitable in Zinman's hands. A late and little-known work, the 'Monopartita,' is thrown in for good measure. This well-played disc is an appealing choice for an introduction to Honegger's distinctive musical voice. |
