Ernst Ottensamer is a virtuoso with a real sense of style, that is to say a musician with an instinct for the difference between the contained romanticism of Mozart's concerto and the overt but differing romanticism of Spohr and Weber. His tone is rich and warm, with a beautiful depth in the lower registers of the basset clarinet in the Mozart, but also a brilliance that has a bit of a wicked glint to it in Weber's finale compared to the dancing ease of Mozart's. Mozart's Adagio is beautifully judged in tempo, a song with a seamless line, while Weber's Romanza is taken quite differently, like a wordless operatic aria: Ottensamer plays it with the flexible tempo and rhythm of which, evidence suggests, Weber would have approved, breaking easily into 'recitative' and slipping naturally back into the declamatory melody. Spohr's short Adagio, a touchingly simple, direct piece, is charmingly delivered, and elsewhere Ottensamer listens with a careful ear to the woodwind and other lines which in this work intermingle so subtly: he is an old Philharmoniker who shows a proper attention to his colleagues.
He is given close, sympathetic support by orchestra and conductor. One of Davis's particular qualities is his ear for the telling simplicities in Mozart, so that here a plain arpeggio springs to life with the clarinet's melody, or a set of repeated notes has a sense of direction towards a cadence, or (in the Adagio) a scale climbing up from the bass completes the meaning of the clarinet's falling half-scales. Anyone acquiring this record should enjoy taking special note of just how musically the 'accompaniment' is all done. The Vienna Philharmonic respond with complete understanding, and the recording engineers have missed nothing.
