|
Basque country, a mountainous region situated on the border between Spain and France, has a rich and colorful cultural history. Flourishing still is the sort of elaborate pagentry found on MUSIQUES BASQUES. The works on this album are all 20th century compositions, and yet evoke a timelessness closely associated with their heritage. Performed with furious energy, Pablo Sorozabal's songs are an adrenaline injection. His 'Gernika' and 'Suite Vasca' open the album with a regal ceremonial orchestral flourish, but are soon overtaken by the powerful choruses. The magnitude of this collection of voices working together at such a pace is a marvelous thing to experience. A cappella pieces provide a change of pace. Francisco de Madina's 'Aita Gurea' features soprano Olatz Saitua-Iribar in a peaceful mode. A crooning chorus swells behind her as they paint a touching pastoral scene. Some of the a cappella pieces challenge the energy of Sorozabal's openers, but Madina's is particularly soft and poignant. |
