This is a delightful disc. Each of the nine overtures is a masterpiece. Barry Wordsworth, a veteran conductor equally at home in the music of ballet, opera, and symphony from the 18th century to the present, treats each work with the loving care it deserves. The LSO, one of the world’s great orchestras, responds admirably, and the recording engineers have accomplished a sound both rich and articulate. Each overture has special qualities in its performance, but I will mention only the cello solos in Morning, Noon, and Night and again in Poet and Peasant. In both cases, the recording engineers chose not to highlight the solo, which therefore comes through about the way one would hear it in a large concert hall. In both overtures, the soloist shapes the melody somewhat differently from the rich legato style one usually encounters. A further distinction in Poet and Peasant is the ethereal realization of the harp that accompanies the solo cello. Thanks to the very clear and well-balanced recording, we hear its gentle figures and arpeggios more clearly than usual, though the playing is charmingly delicate.

I can hardly recall when I first heard any of these pieces, but only three of them in public performances: Mendelssohn’s concert overture—in reality a compact tone poem, and Mozart’s Figaro and Rossini’s Barber (a younger Figaro) before the curtain went up on their complete operas. Modern American symphony orchestras generally do not program them, and more’s the pity. But that means all the more pleasure for the serious record collector who is not ashamed to be caught listening to music with charming melodies, inventive scoring, abundant good humor, and plenty of excitement.
