Sabine Meyer's clarinet has charmed audiences all over the world. Here along with the Berlin Philharmonic, she performs a program of winsome classics. Throughout her career, Meyer has shown an affinity for Mozart, and her performance of his Clarinet Concerto in A seals her reputation. The last of the composer's orchestral pieces, it is among his most majestic. Meyer plays a basset-horn rather than a standard clarinet, giving her the extended range required. The live recording lends the proceedings an extra air of immediacy, adding to the excitement. The studio recordings of Debussy and Takemitsu are no less charming. 'Première Rapsodie' is an intimate affair, spotlighting Meyer's mellifluous tones. Gentle as a breeze, the melody flows, woodwinds and strings subtlety building to a crescendo of brass. Takemitsu's 'Fantasma/Cantos' swells with dreamlike rhythms. Its ethereal harmonies continue with the peaceful style of the album while providing an unmistakable turn toward the contemporary. At ease with music of all ages, Meyer finds the common thread of serenity and beauty in each of these pieces. REVIEWS: American Record Guide (5-6/00, pp.160-61) - "...Abbado's Mozart with the Berlin Philharmonic is light, buoyant, and supremely balanced...The Debussy too is so subtly performed that...[i]t's by far the sweetest performance of the Rhapsody I've ever heard..." |
