Notes & Reviews Back to Top
More than five decades after Georg Hann's death the recordings of his unmistakable voice still have their regular place in the record catalogues. It is, however, mainly for his recordings of buffo roles that he is remembered most today. For a generation which has not heard Hann live on stage this might easily create the impression that he was at his best in roles such as Baculus, van Bett or Kezal. Taking a closer look at his vast repertoire, however, one soon realizes that such type-casting would be incorrect. In Hann's case one can hardly speak of a clearly divided artistic field or a certain fach. The fact that he sang roles from both the baritone and bass repertoire and that he was celebrated on both the operatic and concert stage indicate the exceptional rank which Hann occupied in Germany's musical life at the time.
