I can see this release getting a lot of radio-play, and deservedly so. Taken from The Ohio Light Opera Company's series of complete operetta recordings, this delightful collection includes overtures and entr'actes from Naughty Marietta, The Red Mill, The Sorcerer, The Gondoliers, The Grand Duke, The Brigands, The Firefly, and Autumn Maneuvers. The music, if you don't already know it, is beautifully crafted, tuneful, and effervescent, and it's played by a highly proficient, genuine "pit" orchestra of the correct size. That means fewer strings than you'll hear in many other recordings, which gives the woodwinds, brass, and percussion plenty of prominence without ever forcing the tone. All three conductors do a fine job keeping spirits high and the ensemble on its collective toes, and despite the five-year range of recordings (2001-06) the engineering is remarkably consistent. A release like this is basically self-recommending. If you enjoy this repertoire, or are looking for an excellent collection of the "show tune" instrumental numbers, then by all means try this release.
