This is the third disc in Hyperion's ongoing series of Jean Françaix's orchestral works, and if you enjoyed the first two then this one will be self-recommending. The pair of ballets here are both delightful. Le roi nu is based on a familiar story: The Emperor's New Clothes. So you already know that plot and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy Françaix's scintillating music, which includes some shimmering sonorities for the magic fabric out of which the king's non-garments are made, as well as a sparkling ball sequence and a sexy subplot involving the queen and her lover (well, the adaptation is French, after all). To be honest, I stopped caring how it all turns out in the end and just listened to the attractive music.

Les demoiselles de la nuit (The Ladies of the Night) is in fact a ballet about cats, another French specialty (just ask Collette). The plot really doesn't matter: the music is indeed quite feline, quirky, and lots of fun, particularly in the extended Entrance of Agathe and the final Dance of the Rooftops. If the strings of the Ulster Orchestra have a couple of unsteady moments in this latter piece, it can only be because it must be very unfamiliar music, certainly not easy to play from an ensemble standpoint, and this quibble aside the performances have all of the ebullience and sparkle the music demands thanks to Thierry Fischer's confident guidance. Hyperion's terrific sonics will have you dancing on the rooftops too.
