Notes & Reviews Back to Top
The songs on this recording are from the earlier part of a repertoire familiar to older generations, chiefly through class singing in schools and through domestic music-making, from editions of English and British songs and of communal songs generally. Today, class singing has declined and the song collections are mostly out of print, so many of these songs have become less familiar to younger people. Of the 21 songs presented here, probably only 'Greensleeves' and 'Rule Britannia' and 'God save the King' remain widely known to all ages.
