The recording of 'Eternity's Sunrise' on this album was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Contemporary Composition."
With 'Eternity's Sunrise,' John Tavener's connection to earlier musical styles is made explicit. In sound, his works often seem to draw on elements of medieval and renaissance music: simple, chant-like melodies, modal harmonies.
'Eternity's Sunrise' was written on commission from the Academy of Ancient Music for their 25th anniversary season. It is Tavener's first composition for baroque instruments, though the other four works presented here required only minor adjustments to be suitable for the Academy. The work is conceived on three levels: the long-breathed lines of the soprano as the earth, the gentle tolling of the handbells as angels, and the orchestra above as heaven. The three come together in a stunning whole, a moving example of Tavener's spiritual mysticism.
Of the remaining works, 'Sappho: Lyrical Fragments' takes the largest step away from the style of 'Eternity's Sunrise.' Composed in 1980, it is a serial work, yet not in an unattractive or "academic" manner. Recast with baroque instruments, its connection to the fragments of ancient Greek poetry is deepened.
The Academy of Ancient Music bring their usual excellence to each performance here. If the players would be more comfortable in Handel or Bach, they give no hint of it.
