Volume Three of the Naxos series of Lutoslawski's orchestral music centers on the brilliant Symphony No. 3 written for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This is among the most recorded of modern symphonies, including a version by the composer with the Berlin Philharmonic. The Polish performance stands up well to the competition and offers, in addition to the early Paganini Variations for piano and orchestra, two of the late song cycles to French surrealist poetry, one for tenor and one for baritone. Prior to the post-Stalin thaw in Soviet culture, Lutoslawski wrote in the accepted Socialist Realism style, deploying his fine craftsmanship in music that would be much simpler harmonically than his more characteristic music of the '60s and beyond. The Paganini Variations, using the famous theme from the twenty-fourth caprice, is a brilliant supplement to the more famous treatment by Rachmaninov. Although not fielding an orchestra of the refinement of the Berlin or Los Angeles Philharmonics, Wit offers fine, competitive performances at an unbeatable price and includes much repertoire otherwise unavailable. |
