Leif Ole Andsnes, outstanding among the generation of pianists to emerge in the 1990s, is heard here in live recordings made with Paavo Järvi and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The Shostakovich C minor Concerto is especially live, a real hands-on performance of bold extremes, contrasts and derring-do which underlines its subversive wit while succeeding in making a case for it as a dramatic statement rather than a simple comic diversion. One might say they make a meal of it, and a satisfying one. The Britten Concerto, which like the Shostakovich was written as a display vehicle for its composer, is a rather less uproarious affair and draws playing of color, elegance and great flair from Andsnes, who is most sympathetically accompanied by Järvi and the CBSO. This is a dynamic musical partnership without a hint of routine. As a bonus, Andsnes is joined by trumpet virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, the soloist in the Shostakovich, for the rarely heard 'Legends' of Georges Enesco.
