This disc was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance without Orchestra." The great Russian pianist, Emil Gilels, made a recording for Deutsche Grammophon of some twenty selections from Edvard Grieg's 'Lyric Pieces' that turned out to be one of the great piano recordings ever made. Leif Ove Andsnes opens his comparably fine recital with nine selections from two of Grieg's late collections of folk music transcriptions. Startlingly dissonant when they were new, they accurately reflect the harmonic complexity of his folk sources and take the music into realms commonly associated with Béla Bartók's explorations of Hungarian folk music. Throughout the recital the element of Norwegian folk music pervades the selections even as the music makes use of many of the devices more commonly associated with Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. The seven selections by Geirr Tveitt are taken from a collection of fifty transcriptions of Norwegian folk songs and dances. With the exception of Fartein Valen's Variations, which are a lovely example of non-Schoenberg atonal composition, the rest of the program consists of various pictures of Norwegian life where the qualities of the folk music transcriptions permeate the original material. This is a fascinating look at comparatively rare repertoire beautifully played. REVIEWS: BBC Music (6/98, p.63) - Performance: 4 (out of 5), Sound: 4 (out of 5) - "...Tveitt's versions of folk tunes from Hardanger display variously a Bartókian percussiveness...and an attractive melodic angularity....Valen's Variations...convey real power and substance....Andsnes plays the programme well." |
