This disc received the 1997 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Vocal Performance," and was also nominated for the Award for "Best Classical Album". Bryn Terfel's prodigious talents for characterization come to the fore here. Brought up in the traditions of the Welsh singing contests--he used his winnings to buy soccer shoes!--Terfel became one of the most popular operatic stars almost immediately upon winning the Lieder Prize at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 1989. In everything he sings there is great depth and development of character. He sings not just the notes, but gives life to the words which go with them. The program begins with arias from the Mozart-da Ponte operas ('Le Nozze di Figaro,' 'Così fan tutte,' and 'Don Giovanni'), which were Terfel's first stage engagements and which he has continued to sing to great acclaim. From there, he continues into what might be considered visions of things to come--arias from Wagner and Verdi operas which at 30 he is too young to sing on stage, and French operas in which he had not yet performed. If the excerpts are any indication, this disc will indeed be followed by great things. |
