Donizetti's 'Lucia di Lammermoor' has been an opera house favorite since it was composed. This is due largely to the fact that it serves as a showcase for the singer who undertakes the coloratura soprano role of Lucia. It is demanding both vocally and dramatically, and if the soprano isn't up to the task, the results may appear somewhat ludicrous.
Recorded live in London in 1959, this version of 'Lucia' features one of the most famous Lucias of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland. She brings life to this opera that is not often heard. Sutherland is in absolute top form; from her crystalline tone and effortless coloratura to her dramatic delivery, she is dead-on as the hapless heroine.
Because this opera has little action and a small cast, it takes a great conductor to keep things moving, and Tullio Serafin does just that. John Shaw is a foreboding presence as Lucia's detestable brother Enrico, and the Edgardo of Joao Gibin is at times wrenchingly romantic and subdued.
While the sound quality of this recording is less than pristine, it is well worth listening through for one of the most satisfying chronicles of 'Lucia' on record.
