It is often believed that a composer's final works ought to be seen in the light, as it were, of death. But despite the fact that the Quintet in C Major was written in Schubert's final year there is nothing valedictory at all about this piece. In fact, the quintet ought to be considered an early work, as the composer died in his 31st year. That said, we ought to do away with speculations about musical farewells and instead look at the achievement of this work--and one which receives a ravishing and breathtaking performance here. The uniqueness of this work lies with the composer's decision to do away with the standard ensemble of two violins, two violas and one cello. Instead, Schubert substitutes one of the violas for a second cello. The result is a work that is not only darker in mood but one whose musical argument is symphonic in nature. From the genial nature of the first movement to the ravishing beauty of the sublime Adagio and on to the thrilling intensity of the Scherzo and finally to the jubilant Allegretto, this classic recording from 1982 sounds all the more glorious and timeless in this remastered edition. |
