"Despite any reservations about the way this production is represented on DVD—and it probably was quite absorbing in person—the cast is undeniably strong. Matti Salminen’s malevolent glower and commanding stage-presence might initially appear better suited for Hunding or Fafner, but ultimately he plays, and sings, a good-natured Daland. (His double take when he first sees the ghost ship has just a touch of Jackie Gleason to it.) The title role is impressively rendered by Grundheber, an agonized, intense portrayal from the very first entrance (“Die Frist ist um.”) A big plus is Raimo Sirkiä’s Erik, ardent and appropriately clueless, but a much more sympathetic and three-dimensional characterization than we often get. The recounting of his prophetic dream in act III is terrifying and menacing (that he’s roaming the stage with a musket in hand adds to that impression, no doubt) yet you really feel for him when he subsequently confronts Senta with his disappointment. Sirkiä’s voice has a baritonal quality with plenty of heft; according to his Web site, Sirkiä sings all the Wagnerian heldentenor roles, except for Siegfried. I’d love to hear his Tannhäuser. Hildegard Behrens was beyond her vocal prime when this performance took place, but the singer remained effective in vocally challenging roles well past her sell-date, thanks to unfailing dramatic and musical instincts. Senta’s Ballad is absorbing—there’s some edge to Behrens’s voice but good control and emotional power. Her ecstatic singing at the opera’s conclusion is thrilling. In the smaller roles, Jorma Silvasti deserves special praise for his fresh-voiced Steersman. Segerstam (who looks like he could play Daland) provides solid support from the pit, though the orchestra is nothing to write home about, with an abundance of horn clinkers. The chorus’s contribution is admirable, especially at the start of act III. Kultur’s Dolby Digital stereo sound is not exceptional by audiophile standards, with a flat perspective and narrow soundstage, but balances between orchestra and singers are satisfactory. The “chapter” list that came with my review copy did not correspond to the disc itself. You can opt for English, German, French, or Italian subtitles (or none). The picture has a 4:3 aspect ratio, so if your monitor is a 16:9 screen, you’ll need to change the appropriate setting to get lateral black bars. You definitely don’t need to a see a “stretched” Matti Salminen." Andrew Quint, FANFARE |
