Notes & Reviews Back to Top
In 1961, three of the world’s great instrumental soloists, equally renowned for their work as ensemble players, united to form the celebrated Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio. Eugene Istomin (b. 1925) began his distinguished career at age 17 with a performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with the New York Philharmonic. Since that time, he has performed with every major orchestra and enjoyed great success as a solo recitalist and chamber player. Isaac Stern (b. 1920), one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, made his solo orchestral debut in 1936, playing the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 with the San Francisco Symphony. His wide-ranging achievements also include efforts on behalf of human rights and cultural causes. Leonard Rose (1918-1984) was first chair cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before embarking on a brilliant career as a virtuoso soloist. He was also a preeminent pedagogue, counting among his pupils Lynn Harrell and Yo-Yo Ma. Mr. Rose’s passing in 1984 marked the end of the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio’s legendary collaboration.
