Notes & Reviews Back to Top
The three currently available recordings of the Choral Symphony by Toscanini are in many ways three performances of the same version. In each we note the characteristic driving energy and vigor. This is how Toscanini conducted the Choral Symphony throughout his adult life. There are small differences as he ages but within a unified shape. From 1952 we have a magnificent, final valedictory performance, but from 1939 we hear a younger, more vigorous man. The 1948 performance is, perhaps, both sonically and musically slightly the least successful of the three. The sound is uniform but cramped, but, stemming from an early television broadcast, it affords an opportunity of watching Toscanini. In the performance on this Symposium CD, the earliest, we hear great detail and energy rather than weight. Everywhere, there is feel for melody. Overall the orchestral sound is very different from what would be considered ideal today. There is beautiful string playing, which is very audible as Toscanini likes a high string sound. He does not spotlight solo instruments. Indeed, the horns are held well back, so much so that even when they have the melody, they are often all but inaudible. Probably he feared for their reliability. Toscanini's performances are dance-like, not ponderous, there is the detail of a building illuminated by an Italian sun and everything is controlled. Perhaps it is these features, combined with the very precise beat and relatively steady tempi, which contribute to the notion of Toscanini as a fast and unyielding conductor.
