Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Emma Johnson, one of those rare solo artists who has achieved and retained fame on the clarinet, has done so with recordings such as this one. Covering a wide range of styles and composers, she brings central focus to the instrument and its musical possibilities. Her playing of traditional material is dexterous and mature, such as in the late Mozart concerto, K622. From her first entrance, Johnson connects with the idiomatic quality of Mozart's phrasing, his unique ideas for the instrument.
Johnson does equally well with music of the twentieth century, blending her harmonies with the overtones of the rich piano chords in "La Fille Aux Chevaux De Lin" of Debussy. A transcription of a piece originally for piano, she treats it as such without sacrificing what she may bring to it. The same is true in the incomparable 'Three Preludes' of Gershwin, also originally for piano solo. One knows that Gershwin himself would delight in the deft slides of the clarinet (one of his favorite instruments) over his bluesy melodies. The quality of this recording is most remarkable in its continuity--never losing the clarinet or Johnson through a vast scope of diverse music. A quality recording worth owning.
