Notes: "Through this vale of tears" is a song cycle composed as a tribute to, and commentary on, the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The cycle is comprised of settings of the following seven texts: "Thou dost lay me in the dust of death" (from the composer's cantata, "Black America: To the Memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.") "If there be sorrow" (poem by Mari Evans) "My God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
