"The main work on the first volume in Mark Bebbington’s Frank Bridge survey is the harmonically searching and emotionally draining Piano Sonata from 1921-24. Comparison with distinguished versions from Peter Jacobs (Continuum, 6/91) and Kathryn Stott (Conifer – nla) finds Bebbington the most spacious proponent and Stott generating the greatest intensity, but all three acquit themselves magnificently in this gritty, deeply moving masterwork (dedicated to the memory of the composer Ernest Farrar, who perished at the Somme in 1917). Stott also brings just a touch more point, fun and sparkle to the delectable Vignettes de Marseille (1925) – and Wass’s rendering of “The Midnight Tide” from The Hour Glass (1920) has a terrifying grandeur all its own – but Bebbington is a sensitive, stylish performer who never forces the tone and displays a genuine empathy for Bridge’s touching and consistently absorbing inspiration. What’s more, his subtly variegated tonal palette has been agreeably captured by the microphones.
