Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Reviews from the original recordings which make up this set.

Les Francs-juges, Le Roi Lear:
"The Montreal brass are especially commanding at the opening of Les Francs-juges, and later the famous sing melody has a proper ebullience, while Le Roi Lear has plenty of weight." -- Penguin Guide

Harold in Italy, Tristia:
"In addition to a noble account of Harold, with Nobuko Imai as an eloquent soloist, there is the Tristia with the haunting Funeral March for the last scene of Hamlet given with the chorus as well as the Prelude to the Second Act of Les Troyens. The recording offers a wonderfully natural and realistic sound. Strongly recommended." -- Gramophone

Le Temple universel
"Le Temple universel arose from a projected visit of 8,000 singers to the Crystal Palace in 1861, and after various vicissitudes reached its present form and was eventually performed in connection with the Entente Cordiale in 1905: it is in Berlioz's most grandiloquent manner, as might be expected, with some attractive gentler phrases between the more Babylonian outbursts. Veni Creator [is] a plain but agreeably graceful setting" -- Gramophone
