Franz Liszt's spectacular life and career could be divided by his residences. The early stardom occurred in Paris, where he associated with poets, revolutionaries and actresses, met Paganini and Chopin and, by melding their gifts, almost single-handedly forged the image of the Romantic piano hero. In 1842 he became Court Music Director at Weimar and there morphed from rock star to statesman, teaching, conducting and promoting the art of others such as Wagner while working to enhance the city's cultural profile. During this period there was also a change in his composition, from flashy showpieces to more serious fare, including masterpieces such as the B Minor Piano Sonata and the 'Faust Symphony,' based on the creation of Weimar's most famous intellectual, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
The symphony, longer than any previously written, is comprised of three character-study tone poems linked by recurring motives and a fourth movement, "Andante mistico," which caps the work with tenor and chorus intoning the "Chorus Mysticus" from Part Two of Faust, the same words that conclude Mahler's Eighth Symphony. Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic offer a rich and powerful performance of the symphony, with Placido Domingo a stellar tenor soloist. The Teldec recording is sensational.
