Notes & Reviews Back to Top
All credit to the Germans for continuing to treasure this opera alongside Verdi’s later version of the Falstaff story. Nicolai’s glorious overture provides a fair foretaste of the sparkle evident throughout the score, which is endearingly performed here with Helen Donath’s pure-toned soprano, Wolfgang Brendel’s flexible light baritone and Karl Ridderbusch’s rich bass heading a fine cast. It makes an ideal way to get to know this delightful opera.

-- Andrew Lamb Gramophone [12/1998]
