Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This recording includes a radio interview with Herbert von Karajan.
This 1978 recording of Verdi's Trovatore represents the culmination of Herbert von Karajan's life-long association with and championing of this opera. Wanting to encourage Karajan to return the Vienna Staatsoper, the house management offered to stage once again his most successful stage productions from the 1960s. He was successfully lured back by the opportunity of not only returning to this beloved Verdi opera but also overseeing its broadcast on national television. Karajan had, by then, been acclaimed for his compelling rhythmic sense of this score and, as one critic put it, for capturing the steely surface of the sound that Verdi had described in so many of his letters. For this monumental undertaking, Karajan called on the outsized singing and dramatic talents of Placido Domingo for his "troubador," and Domingo rises to the occasion every time he opens his mouth. Karajan chose the Bulgarian soprano Raina Kabaiwanska for his Leonora, with whom he had fostered a close-knit professional relationship. Karajan's sympathetic accompanying of Kabaiwanska's beautifully placed, faultless pianissimo singing allows these passages to glow with a radiance that brings down the house.
