Henry Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas' is the only English opera, before those of Benjamin Britten, to have won a place in the standard repertoire. While 'Dido and Aeneas' owes much to the expansive French tragédie lyrique of Jean-Baptiste Lully, Purcell operated on a smaller scale, and his opera is a tight, dramatically disciplined gem. The role of the tragic Carthaginian queen has been essayed by such singers as Kathleen Ferrier, Jessye Norman and Kiri Te Kanawa. This recording features the delightful Spanish soprano Teresa Berganza as Dido and tenor Per-Arne Wahlgren as the Trojan hero, Aeneas. Berganza sings the role with just the right balance of heart-breaking vulnerability and grand tragedy, and she is a superb in Dido's great aria, "When I am laid in earth." Wahlgren captures the heroic spirit of Aeneas and soprano Danielle Borst is excellent in the supporting role of Belinda, Dido's maid. Michel Corboz leads a stylish performance with sensitive playing by the Ensemble Instrumental de Lausanne. |
