Most of my comments from my review of this disc's companion (Songs my father taught me--type Q5118 in Search Reviews) still apply, although on this go around baritone Thomas Allen's voice and interpretive stance seem more carefully nuanced and more suited to the intimate nature of the material. Of course, part of this could be due to the fact that these 29 songs are generally less familiar (at least to a North American listener) than those on the first disc, and thus come without the same degree of preconditioned expectations. As before, it's obvious that Allen, with his strong, sturdy, rich baritone, really does love these songs and truly sounds as one with a long and cherished association with them. You can hear the full force of his expressive, heartfelt delivery in songs such as the opening (a cappella) "Water o' Tyne", or in such wonderfully schmaltzy classics as Eric Coates' "I heard you singing" and "Star of God", J.L. Molloy's "Love's Old Sweet Song", and the epitome of sentimentality and a once-ubiquitous wedding favorite, "Because". Closest to a real art-song is Sullivan's "Orpheus with his Lute", which Allen and his ideally matched piano partner Malcolm Martineau deliver with a lively, lilting, glint-in-the-eye dancing style reminiscent of some of the song performances by Pears and Britten. We also hear "Down by the Salley Gardens"--not Britten's famous arrangement, but a rather more straightforward one that works just fine. Allen ends the recital as he began, with another a cappella song--"She moved thro' the fair", and certainly this singer's fans will sit back satisfied after nearly 80 minutes of well-recorded, sincerely wrought, artfully sung entertainment.
