An intriguing portrait of a versatile and passionate musician. Violinist Gidon Kremer, born in Latvia, has thrived on the modern and the unknown. It was Kremer who introduced the West to Schnittke. Yet he has also recorded his share of Baroque music, with Bach, Biber, and Telemann represented in this set alongside the 20th century's Schönberg, Webern, and Stockhausen. Also included are Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert as well as the Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Karayev, and Salmanov. In short, this is Gidon Kremer in all his guises playing varied repertoire: solo, chamber music, and with orchestra, in live recordings made between 1970 and 1993. |
