These selections were formerly available as Vanguard OVC 4029
Aaron Copland's early compositions included elements of jazz, an unmistakable influence in the 1920s. In the Piano Concerto of 1927 we find both Copland's innovation of the form as well as his integration of jazz elements into the serious repertoire, in an edgy twentieth-century piece which breaks off into piano jazz interludes at various intervals. Frequently asymmetrical, it carries the listener forward with imbalance and surprise as often as tunefulness (Gershwin in his genius was still accused of predictable phrases in his concert works). Here also are hints of ideas that would later be found in Copland's Ballet 'Rodeo'.
The Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra of Gian Carlo Menotti somewhat resembles the work of Gershwin in the same key. This piece, like Copland's, comes from a background of training, which is reflected in a tighter and more intense style. It is a lively and accessible piece despite its modern vocabulary, and, like Copland, Menotti was shaping the concerto form to be a dialogue with the orchestra, reducing the showmanship associated with concertos of the nineteenth century. Both pieces are exciting snapshots of the melding of musical ideas that was taking place at the beginning of the twentieth century.
