This selection is also available on Walking Frog (distribution) 622. Few things sound as wonderful as a really large wind band, and the Cincinnati College Conservatory Wind Symphony is a really large band, numbering around 60 with a total of 51 wind players. Most fortunately, it is also really good, comprised of students from one of America's leading conservatories, and a thoroughly professional enterprise in every aspect except actual fact. This program goes backward in time, off to the races with John Adam's hectic toccata 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine' and concluding with a suite of dances from the 'Terpsichore' of German Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius. In between is an earnest Passacaglia by former Brown professor Ron Nelson, the glib 'Postcard' of Frank Ticheli, and the light and Colorful 'Suite française' by Darius Milhaud. Throughout, one is struck by the excellence of the Wind Symphony, certainly one of the best ensembles of its kind, presented here in nicely detailed, atmospheric sound. |
