This selection is also available in Super Audio CD format.
The 'Missa Salisburgensis' represents the height of 17th-century ceremonial music. Whereas all masses convey a sense of significance, 'Salisburgensis' originated in connection with what may have been the most important ceremony ever to take place in Salzburg. For the city's 1100th anniversary as a papal city, this remarkable music was commissioned.
No expense was spared in the first performance of this majestic mass. Likewise, in this performance, made on authentic period instruments, every effort was made to recreate the awesome spectacle. The all-digital recording captures the immensity of the event with utter clarity.
Led by Paul McCreesh, the artists assembled for this album turn in performances every bit as impressive as the composition. Listeners are transported back in time to the days of the Holy Roman Empire, when music was a celebration of the melding of the kingdom of heaven and the kingdoms of earth.
REVIEWS:
Early Music America (Spring-2000, p.14) - "...Some of the finest singers in the English early music community are found in the multiple choirs, and they sing with delicacy and finesse. The instrumental forces are equally splendid....raucous excess played and sung to perfection..."
