Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This record beckons us into little-known territory. If the names of Tunder, Weckmann, Strungk and Bruhns are familiar to you, then it's probably because their organ music gets an occasional airing today. Until now, however, few of us have had the opportunity to hear the chamber cantatas for which these North German composers were equally famous during the second half of the seventeenth century. The works in this selection are striking, sometimes passionate pieces, and although deeply indebted to Italian models, also freely allude to the chorale melodies so familiar to Protestant audiences of the time. Distant ancestors though they are of Bach's cantatas, the lineage is perfectly evident.

There is at least one great work here: Weckmann's Wie liegt die Stadt so wuste, a large setting (15 minutes) of verse from Lamentations that must refer to the great plague of Hamburg in 1663. Words such as ''see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow'' bring out the best not only in Weckmann but also in the two soloists, Maria Zedelius and (particularly) Michael Schopper. This is moving, memorable singing, and the accompaniments by members of Cologne Musica Antiqua are equally exquisite. The other works, though more modest in scope, have a quiet beauty that is certainly worth getting to know; and the performances are consistently good, though Zedelius tends to make rather less of her words than does the more expressive Schopper. Both CD and LP are excellent in their sound-quality.'
