Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Given conductor John Rutter's advocacy of the reconstructed original version of the Fauré Requiem, it is not surprising that when Rutter the composer came to write a Requiem he would feel the influence of the older work. Rutter's Requiem, like Fauré's, eschews high drama and upper strings, varies from the letter of the Catholic liturgy and has a ravishing "Pie Jesu" for treble solo. There is even some stylistic affinity, especially in the closing "Lux aeterna," while at other times its eagerness to communicate suggests Leonard Bernstein, occasionally dissonant but ultimately seeking the happy ending.
Rutter recorded the Requiem with his Cambridge Singers but admits that the sound and style of the renowned Choir of King's College, Cambridge has long been on his mind and, in fact, several of the shorter works on this disc were written for them. "Cantus," "What Sweeter Music" and "Veni Sancte Spiritus" receive their first recordings here, the latter written specifically for this disc, while the Te Deum is heard for the first time in this version for choir, organ and brass. The Requiem performance is a little faster than the composer's own but has his seal of approval and is captured in the famous King's College acoustic.
REVIEWS:
BBC Music (5/98, pp.59-60) - Performance: 4 (out of 5), Sound: 4 (out of 5) - "...The habitual cool professionalism of the King's choristers diplayed throughout the recording cannot mask the relish with which the boy soloists deliver Rutter's arching melodies - a highly recommended release."
