Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This disc was nominated for the 2000 Gramophone magazine award for "Best Vocal Recording."
Ned Rorem has been one of the dominant voices in the creation of the American art song. Rorem has been writing songs for nearly five decades and has found inspiration in the words of over two hundred poets. This collection includes songs set to the poetry of Walt Whitman, Frank O'Hara, Theodore Roethke, William Butler Yeats and others. The mezzo-soprano Susan Graham is joined by pianist Malcolm Martineau and Ensemble Oriol on this recording.
Rorem impresses with the flexibility of his creative voice. No two songs sit in the same stylistic pigeon hole, and his ability to set text is miraculous. This is much to admire in this recital. Although seventy-five years old, Rorem has an uncanny ability to capture the essence of youth. His settings of Paul Goodman's "For Susan," Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" and Andrew Glaze's "A Journey" are simple, unaffected and totally compelling. Of course it helps to have a singer like Graham who possesses intelligence and tonal beauty to spare. Rorem's world of song is extremely delicate and subtle, it is also endlessly rewarding. This is a fine introduction to a composer whose elegance, taste and lyrical gifts are boundless.
REVIEWS:
International Record Review (6/00, p.98) - "...for the most part, Graham and Martineau make the strongest possible case for Rorem's songs...Beautifully recorded in a natural 'concert hall' ambience, this is one of my favourite discs of the year so far..."
Newsday (4/30/00, p.26) - "...the glint in [Graham's] voice brings out the peach-and-gold streak of wistfulness of Rorem's songs. His musical settings seem to emerge from a somewhere deep inside the words. With her clear, unforced pronunciation...and soft rounding of a phrase, Graham tightens the partnership of poetry and notes..."
New York Times (Publisher) (6/11/00, p.30) - "...Every song - even the most modest ones, like the ambling, tender setting of Robert Hillyer's "Early in the Morning" - abounds in refinement and grace..."
