Great Mozart by Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. November 2, 2012
By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews
"Perhaps I am gilding the lily by writing this review. What additional praise can be heaped upon this disc which hasn't already been noted by previous reviewers? Still, let me get my two cents worth in. Mozart authored a total of 41 symphonies. Included on the present CD are three of his most outstanding works. Personally, I love all three, as I do much of the genius's other works. I am particularly partial to "Jupiter," but, as I say, only a complete fool would not love them all. Szell brought the Cleveland Orchestra to new heights. They handled these masterpieces aptly in a masterful way. Szell and the orchestra savored all the subtle and not so subtle nuances of Mozart's art. The beautiful offering is presented with glowing expertise. There are many renditions of these chestnuts to choose from, but you might be sorry if you don't settle for this one. The only shortcoming that I find with this disc is that Szell and Columbia Records for reasons of frugality opted to cut out all of the customary repeats in the symphonies. They wanted to get all three on one disc. They just as well could have added one more symphony, included the repeats, and made it a two disc set. Unlike another reviewer, I enjoy the repeats. You can never get enough of a good thing, and Mozart's music is indeed a great thing!"
